Alice Gwendolyn Barkley Wilson, 98, of Wilson died peacefully at Clear Creek Nursing Home and Rehab Center in Mint Hill, NC on Monday, November 3, 2014. She had celebrated her 98th birthday on October 7, 2014 with family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Doug Murray will officiate. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Wilson. The family will receive friends Saturday, from 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson. Gwen was born in 1916 in Halifax County to Clifton Ferguson Barkley and Pearl Braswell Barkley. She was the oldest of five children. Gwen, as she was called by family and friends, graduated from Enfield High School. Later, she met Richard Haskins Wilson of Wilson and they were married in Enfield on September 10, 1939 and moved to Wilson. Mr. Wilson was eighty-four when he died in 2001. Gwen was a member of the Wilson Woman’s Club, former member of the Garden Club, and the Wilson Photography Club. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Wilson for sixty-one years, where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School class. Gwen devoted her life to her family. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Surviving are her two daughters, Judith W. Bentley and husband, Bernie of Matthews and Jennifer W. Tillery and husband, Brad of Leland; two grandchildren, John Bradford Tillery and wife, Becky of Fairfax, VA and Sarah Jennings Tillery Smith and husband, Matthew of Arlington, VA; a great-granddaughter, Blair Gwendolyn Tillery of Fairfax, VA; a sister, Vera Felton of Kinston; and many devoted nieces, nephews, and friends. Along with her parents and husband, Gwen was predeceased by her brothers, Ferdie Barkley and Victor Barkley, and her sister, Marion Barkley Luper. Gwen’s family is very grateful to Catherine Morrison of Home Instead in Charlotte, Camille Timberlake BSN of Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, and the staff of Clear Creek Nursing Home in Mint Hill for their devoted care to Gwen.
