November 7, 1951 – December 5, 2018
Betty Joan Williamson Joyner, 67, of Bailey passed from this earthly life to her heavenly home, surrounded by her loving husband and family at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, Goldsboro on Wednesday, December 5, 2018.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2018 at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson with visitation from 6 – 6:45 pm. prior to the service.
Joan was born November 7, 1951, in Wilson County, daughter of the late George Thomas Williamson and Nola Mae Evans Williamson, and enjoyed being raised on the family farm near Fremont in Wayne County with her large family. She met the love of her life, Frank Joyner, and they enjoyed forty-seven years of marriage.
Joan suffered from ALS but she fought the ravages of this debilitating disease to the end. She was strong and courageous, never complaining, but accepting the challenge with faith in her Lord. Frank was her most devoted caregiver, being there for her every need. They were both a testimony to how faith in God’s plan will see you through adversity. Joan loved her family, her Rock Springs Church family, community friends and former co-workers who were so loyal in visiting and praying for her and Frank.
Joan retired from Wake County Housing Authority after eleven years of service and having worked with Wilson House Authority for nineteen years. She was a devoted employee and enjoyed a camaraderie with many co-workers. Her favorite pastimes were spending time at their beach home, fishing and boating, gardening, and time with her family. She loved any activity outdoors. Her and Frank’s coping mechanisms were prayer and humor. They laughed, prayed and cried together.
Joan is survived by her husband, Frank Joyner; grandsons, Trevor Joyner and Trey Joyner of Middlesex; brothers, Clayton Williamson and wife, Faye, G.C. Williamson and wife, Melinda, Harold Williamson and wife, Linda; sisters, Ruth Jernigan, Velma Lancaster and husband, Wade all of Fremont and Darlene Bumgarner and husband, Don of Wilson; special sister-in-law and caregiver, Joyce Brantley of Bailey and numerous nieces and nephews who visited and cared for her.
In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her beloved sons, Michael Frank Joyner and Brian Keith Joyner and her sisters, Ola Johnson and Sylvia Hess.
The family gives special thanks and gratitude to Dr. Bedlack’s team at Duke ALS Clinic in Durham, the staff of 3HC Hospice and Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
