Charles Elton Finch

Mr. Charles Elton Finch went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 23, 2017. The Christmas season was his favorite time of the year, how ironic that he saw his Lord and Savior face to face as the world celebrated the birth of Christ.
He was born July 31, 1940 to the late Van Henry Finch and Mrs. Alma Owens Finch in the Saratoga community of Wilson County. He was affectionately known to his friends as “Charlie,” “Rooster,” or “Red.” He was known as a dedicated family man with a humble heart full of respect, love, care, and compassion. Charlie was a hard-working man who never met a stranger. He loved a joke and exemplified joy, laughter, and fun. Charlie and Alma were a devoted couple, childhood sweethearts, who were married for 58 years. He was dedicated to his wife and often wrote in her greeting cards, “No words, presents, or candy can match the love I have for you!” He lovingly referred to family members as “sugar.”
As a devoted servant of Bailey United Methodist Church, he was part of the Horace Meacomes Sunday School class. Mr. Finch was a retired city of Raleigh letter carrier and supervisor with the U. S. Postal Service. He was a member and director of the North Carolinas chapter of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and served as vice-president of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE). He also served on the Union Board of Branch 459 (NALC). At various times he was employed by J. C. Penney, Hardee’s, Ample Storage, Mayflower Moving Company, The Raleigh Times, Swift and Co. Alliance One, Brinks, and Finch’s Used Cars. He was a man of many interest and trades.
Mr. Finch was a devoted North Carolina State fan and enthusiastic cheerleader for his favorite teams. He had a deep love for travel; he toured most states and visited seven countries abroad. He loved country music and visiting Nashville, Tennessee and the Grand Ole Opry. Charlie loved to sing and often amused family and friends with impromptu melodies and old favorites. He and his family visited numerous amusement venues, historic sites, and scenic parks. He loved western movies and was a cowboy at heart. He was a sharp dresser and very observant of current fashion trends. He was known for, his writing ability and distinctive penmanship. One of Charlie’s favorite pastimes was to engage in a competitive game of cards with his siblings.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Finch was predeceased by brothers, Van Henry Finch, Jr., Jack Finch, and Franklin Finch.
Mr. Finch is survived by four brothers; Douglas Finch (Peggy) of Wilson, Bobby Finch of Vanceboro, Kenneth Finch (Diane) of Middlesex, and Jerry Finch (Mary) of Eureka; sisters, Laura Finch Hill of Norfolk, Virginia, Jean Finch Webb of Wilson, and Diane Finch Amerson (Bobby) of Wilson. Mr. Finch was blessed with three daughters; Sandy Finch Stone (Daryl) of Middlesex, Wendy Finch Harris (Dennis) of Wilson, and Kelly Finch Varnell of Bailey. grandchildren; Lindsay Stone Corbett (Allen), Jordan William Charles Stone (Taylor), Bailee Stone Arnold (Joseph), Laura Sutter Malcervelli (Victor), Lesley Marie Sutter, Ryan Thomas Sutter (Megan), Cameron Varnell (Jennifer), and Tyler Griffin, and his great-grandchildren, Hudson J. Corbett, Charlotte-Rose Corbett, Rowan Malcercelli, Violet Malcercelli, Jacob C. Sutter, and Mei-Louise Varnell.
The family will receive friends at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson, on Thursday evening, December 28, 2017 from 4:30 until 6:45 p.m. His life will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Joyner’s Funeral Home. Commemorating his life will be his grandsons, Allen Corbett, and Jordan Stone along with Rev. Michael Coppock, his pastor at Bailey United Methodist Church. Interment will be private on Friday morning at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Wilson.
