Charlie Harper Sauls
May 27, 1957 – October 6, 2015
Charlie Harper Sauls, age 88, of Wilson passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday morning. He courageously fought for the last several years of his life against cancer and dementia. His strength of character and dedication to and the love for his family kept him strong through the physical battles. On Tuesday morning, he escaped from the life struggles he had faced into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Charlie was born in Greene County on May 27, 1927 to Alberta and James Sauls. He was married to the one and only love of his life, Joann Smith Sauls of Goldsboro on June 11, 1954. They were married for sixty-one years and have two sons, Glenn Sauls of Atlanta, Georgia and Tony Sauls of Wilson.
Charlie retired from South Life Insurance Company after thirty-one years of service. His passion truly was his church, bluegrass music, and being with his family, particularly his five grandchildren. He loved singing in church and occasionally playing his harmonica.
Charlie was known in the Wilson County community as a kind, friendly, and outgoing man who loved people and God. He was a member of the Farmington Heights Church of God.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Joann of the home; two sons, Glenn Sauls and Tony Sauls and wife, Stephanie, and five grandchildren, David, Jonathan, Gracyn-Harper, Kennedy, and Sloane. Also surviving are his two sisters, Mary Ginn of Snow Hill and Etheleen Hikes of Goldsboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and ten brothers.
His funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Joyner’s Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11a.m. Friday morning at Evergreen Memorial Park, Wilson. The Rev. Reynolds Smith, Rev. LaVon Phillips, and Dr. Glenn Sauls will officiate.
