Clarence Eugene Gleaton, Jr.
September 7, 1925 – February 29, 2016
Clarence Eugene Gleaton, Jr., 90, of Spring Hope passed away Monday. A private service will be conducted at a later time.
Gene served his country with honor and pride, as a Marine during WWII in the Pacific Conflict. He joined the Army and he served during the Korean War. He became a helicopter pilot and served in Lebanon and Viet Nam. He felt it was an honor to pilot for The National Geographic crew while they were mapping Antarctica. Gene was rewarded by having Mt. Gleaton in Antarctica named after him.
Gene is survived by his wife, Rose Pimpinella Gleaton of Rocky Mount; his daughters, Susan G. Smith and husband, Jackson of Goldsboro, and Karen G. White of Spring Hope; grandson, Alexander McCormick Smith, and great-granddaughter, Alexis Leigh Smith.
