Dora B. Lee
July 20, 1923 – April 11, 2016
The Angels took Dora “Mémé” Lee, 92, of Wilson Monday. A celebration of life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at The Church of St. Therese, 700 Nash Street NE, Wilson. The Rev. Gregory Lowchy will officiate.
The family will receive friends 6 -8 p.m. Wednesday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.
Dora leaves behind her devoted daughters Carolyn Aldridge, Nancy (Bob) Farris, and Dora Turner; her grandchildren: Mary Kay (Kenny) Rayfield; William (Sonya) Westbrook; Caroline Quinn; Joe (Ashley) Farris; Will (Cambron) Farris; Jennifer (Brad) Hummel; Carie (Jon) Page; and Nathan Turner; and her great-grandchildren: Matthew and Megan Westbrook; Kaitlyn, Jordan, and MacKenzie Rayfield; Sam and Lillie Quinn; Gabriel, Soloman, Mary, Max, Gemma, and Isaac Farris; Eli and Jacob Farris; and Quinn Hummel, along with the countless nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends whose lives have been enriched by knowing her.
As a young woman in Clinton, Mass., she played guitar for family and friends and was an accomplished swimmer. When World War II and Fort Devens brought “Blondie” (Harold Lee) into her life, she soon became an attentive mother, homemaker and superb cook, known for her made-from-scratch spaghetti and meatballs. She and husband Harold Lee came to Elm City and then Wilson where they enjoyed an active life together, fishing in Florida and at Atlantic Beach. After Harold’s death, she traveled extensively abroad and across the country and participated actively in her church, the Church of St. Therese, and the Women’s Clubs of Wilson and Elm City. Her growing family became one of her greatest sources of pride, evident in her growing collection of photo books as she meticulously documented every holiday, every vacation, and every celebration. Her family will fondly remember countless shopping trips in Wilson and Rocky Mount, summer vacations at Atlantic Beach, her bottomless M&M jars, and birthday cards from “?” She was a southern lady to her core, never caught without her lipstick or her notorious “rain cap.”
Dora will now be with those who preceded her in death: her husband, Harold Lee; her parents Adelard and Emmeline; sisters Corinne and Marie; brother George; niece Corinne; son-in-law Kenneth; grandson-in-law Joe; and great grandsons John Paul and Benedict.
Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to The Church of St. Therese, 700 Nash Street NE, Wilson, NC 27893.
