Doris Phillips Barnes

Doris Phillips Barnes November 13, 1927 – July 28, 2020 Doris Phillips Barnes, 92, of Wilson, passed on Tuesday, July 28, 2020. A private service and an online memorial service will be held a later date. Doris was a 1964 graduate of the Wilson School of Nursing and spent many years in the medical field. She retired as Director of Health Services at Atlantic Christian College. In 1989 Doris earned her Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from Atlantic Christian College. She was an English major. Doris was a member of the First Christian Church of Wilson and a volunteer with the American Red Cross and many other local organizations. Doris was an avid painter who was the first president of the Wilson Active Artists. In addition to art, she loved reading, writing and travel. Doris is survived by her sister, Mary Faye Thomas of Shalimar, Florida; sons, William Henry Barnes, Jr. (Carol) of Durham and Ernest Phillips Barnes of Wilson; daughter Janet Barnes Harris (John) of Hendersonville; six grandchildren, Preston Sterling Barnes, Elizabeth Barnes, Faith McGrain (Matt), John Winston Harris (Kayla), Lauren Branch Harris and Phillip Carawan Barnes (Jennifer) and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Preston Gray Phillips and Florence Mable Skinner Phillips; four brothers and two sisters.
