Dr. Artis Dwight Johnson
July 30, 1922 – May 10, 2019
Dr. Johnson attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry in 1945.
He served two year in the US Navy aboard the US Princeton Aircraft Carrier in the Pacific and started his dental practice in Wilson, NC in 1947. Dr. Johnson was a member of the NC Dental Society, the American Dental Association, the Wilson Dental Society, the Elks Club of Wilson and the Kiwanis Club of Wilson. He was a strong supporter of Barton College, was a member of the Barton Society, and received the Honorary Alumnus Award from Barton College in October, 2010. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a former Deacon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred Walls Johnson in 2012, a sister Martha Johnson Stallings of Pinetops, and a nephew David Johnson of Richmond, Virginia. He is survived by a brother, Henry Gibbs Johnson of Richmond, Virginia, a niece Susan Stallings Harris and husband, Bill of Pittsboro, and nephew Brad Stallings and wife, Kristina of Alexandria, Virginia. He is also survived by two stepdaughters, Linda Walls Ward and husband, Bill of Wilson, Cindy Walls Booth and husband, Richard of Raleigh, and a stepson Charles Merrill Walls, Jr. and wife, Linda of Wilson. Dr. Johnson also had six step-grandchildren, Angela and Edwin Ward, Caley Booth Lawrence and Harrison Booth, and Matthew and Steven Walls.
Dwight was a very compassionate person. He enjoyed people and animals, and loved time spent working on his farm in Fountain, where he raised cattle.
Arrangements are by Joyner’s Funeral Home. There will be a graveside service at 11:00 Wednesday, May 15 at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, with Dr. Tom Watkins officiating.
