Franklin J. Youngs
June 5, 1921 – April 16, 2018
Dr. Franklin J. Youngs, 96, of Wilson, NC died April 16, 2018 at Kitty Askins Hospice in Goldsboro, NC. Dr. Youngs was born June 5, 1921, son of the late Reverend and Mrs. George Edwin Youngs. He attended Hartwick College and graduated from medical school at the University of Syracuse and completed his residency in Brooklyn, NY.
He was an Assistant Surgeon in the US Navy where he was discharged with the rank of Lt. Commander in 1960. Following his discharge from the Navy, Dr. Youngs moved to Wilson, NC where he would spend 29 years as a radiologist, retiring as Chief of Staff.
In 2001, at the age of 80, he came out of retirement and returned to Radiology at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro, NC. He continued there until his retirement in November of 2017. Dr. Youngs was dedicated to the state of North Carolina and earned the Order of the Longleaf Pine in 2015.Dr. Youngs was very civic-minded, serving on the Stantonsburg Town Board for many years. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club and past President of the NC Cancer Society. Dr. Youngs was a member of Stantonsburg United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Judi Spence Youngs of the home, children, Bryan Spence Youngs and his wife, Kathryn Woodall Youngs, Robyn Leigh Allen and husband, Cornell Allen, Diane Y. Farris, Sally Y. Hanes, and a daughter-in-law, Betty. Surviving grandchildren include Chris Farris, Sally Madden, Andrea Farris, Kevin Farris, Kathy Wilkins, Franklin Jay Youngs, III, Franklin Spence Youngs and William Austin Youngs. Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Erin Madden, Jasper Wilkins and Karsen Wilkins and Frances “Frankie” Youngs.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Youngs was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie Parker Youngs; son, Franklin (Lyn) Jay Youngs, Jr. and a grandchild, Kyle Hanes.
The family will receive friends at Joyner’s Funeral Home on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 10am. Funeral services for Dr. Youngs will be held 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Rd Parkway, Wilson, NC with the Reverend Dr. David Hailey officiating. Interment will be private.
