Edward Chadwick McClees, Jr.
January 23, 1928 - December 7, 2016
Chapel Hill-Edward Chadwick McClees, Jr., 88, died peacefully at home on December 7, 2016. A celebration of his life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 28 at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Elm City. The Rev. Dr. Julian McClees Aldridge, Jr. will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the McClees home on Beauvue Road, Elm City.
Edward was born on January 23, 1928, the son of Jane Bullock McClees and Dr. Edward Chadwick McClees of Elm City. He attended Elm City School and graduated from Staunton Military Academy in Virginia. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1951. After the Air Force he attended the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He started his career with Stuart Walston Interiors of Wilson and then worked with Alterman Studios in High Point. The majority of his career was with Harvey Gunter and Associates of Durham as an interior designer and decorator.
Edward owned a beach house at Emerald Isle that was a source of many good times and great memories. He was an avid bridge player and well-liked by all who knew him. Edward moved to The Cedars Retirement Community in Chapel Hill twelve years ago where he made many friends and expanded his bridge circle.
Edward is survived by his longtime business associate and friend, Harvey D. Gunter, Jr. of Chapel Hill, his niece, Kim Taylor McClees of Elm City, his nephew, Thomas A. McClees, Jr. of Wilson and many cousins on the Aldridge and Bullock sides of the family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jane Bullock McClees and Dr. Edward Chadwick McClees, his brother, Thomas Atwood McClees and his wife Mildred Taylor McClees all of Elm City.
