Evelyn Wood Hynes
January 28, 1927 – February 5, 2022
Jennie Evelyn Wood Hynes, 95, was born on January 28th, 1927, in Old Trap, North Carolina and passed away peacefully at home in Brunswick, Maine on February 5, 2022. The family played hymns and 1940’s music in her final hours and surrounded her with hugs and joyful recollections.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 12, 2022, at Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson. Rev. Gary Walling will officiate. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.
Evelyn attended Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the age of 16. She met Jim Hynes when he was in Greensboro on assignment for the 8th Army Air Corps. Evelyn walked by Jim on the street and he asked her out on a date. They were engaged on their second date and eloped in 1946.
Jim and Lyn were married almost 70 years. They raised three children and moved frequently for Jim’s career. Lyn was active in church wherever they lived. After the children left home, Lyn taught school, was the CFO for a small electronics firm and ran a dairy farm with her son. They lived in Nashua, New Hampshire for almost 30 years where Lyn served as President of Church Women United and volunteered regularly for the Red Cross.
Lyn and Jim were active well into their 80s. They sailed, canoed, camped, snowshoed, hiked, biked and walked every day. Lyn loved horses and kept her saddle for years after she stopped riding.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Jim; her grandson, David; her parents, Reverend Grover Cleveland Wood and Dora Winstead Wood; her sister Katie, and her brothers, Tilghman, Eugene, Ray, and Grover Cleveland, Jr.
Lyn is survived by her three children Beverly, Nancy (Daniel), James (Lisa) and her grandchildren, Matthew (Kristen), Zach, Evelyn (Tynan), and James Roald.
Evelyn’s message to her family was “Stay Well and Have Fun!” That’s the life she lived and the lesson she wanted everyone to know.
