Horace Melton Meacomes, Sr.
March 15, 1925 – February 10, 2021
Horace Melton Meacomes, Sr., 95 of Bailey passed away Wednesday, he was born on March 15, 1925 and was a retired Assistant State Auditor.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-six years, Sarah Ann Moss Meacomes; parents, Robert M., and Carrie U. Meacomes; brother, Robert Ray Meacomes and his very dear friend, Doris Finch Bass.
Horace is survived by his sons, Robert M. Meacomes and wife, Vickie of Coral Gables, Florida, and Horace Meacomes, Jr. and wife, Bobbie of Bailey; foster children, Peggy Evans Bullock and husband, Dwight of Bailey, and David K. Evans and wife, Beth of Bailey; grandson, Christopher D. Meacomes and wife, Karen of Wilson; great-grandchildren, Carson D. Meacomes and Katelyn Deanna Meacomes both of Wilson and many step and foster children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Over the early years, he variously worked as a butcher, a teller with the Lucama-Kenly Bank, a merchant, and operated an insurance agency. After receiving a degree in accounting from Atlantic Christian College, he spent seventeen years with the North Carolina State Auditor, where he audited State Departments, Agencies, Commissions, and Institutions.
He served in World War II as a member of a B-24 Bomber crew in the 8th Army Air Force, flying twenty-two bombing missions over Germany, and he received three Air Medals, among others.
Horace was a Past Master of Bailey Masonic Lodge, Teacher, and SS Superintendent in Bailey United Methodist Church, a Volunteer Fireman for thirty-two years, early president and organizer of the Nash County Firemen’s Association, Chairman of Nash County Jury Commission, Board Member of Bailey Business Development Corporation, Nash County Industrial Commission and various area boards and committees.
Horace enjoyed reading, writing articles, photography, videography, recording music and DVD’s, genealogical research, and collecting memorabilia. He was often referred to as Bailey’s Historian.
Private burial will be held at a later date.
