Hugh M. Flowers
July 3, 1932 – April 29, 2017
Hugh M. Flowers of Lucama completed his life’s journey on Saturday, April 29, 2017. Hugh was born on July 3, 1932 to Meakie T. and Ellen W. Flowers. Upon graduation from East Carolina in 1956, Hugh taught in Sanford City Schools, Sanford, NC. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving 2 years in Orleans, France; upon his honorable discharge, Hugh began his 36 year career at Lucama School, 10 years as a successful coach and teacher and 26 years as the principal.
To Hugh, the most important successes in his life were his marriage to Annette Fuller, the love of his life, and his two daughters, Kim and Karin and later his son-in-law, John. For 55 years, Hugh and Annette were a team in everything they did in life.
Hugh lived life to the fullest and leaves behind a rich legacy of love and laughter. He led the baseball team to the 1960 Class A State Championship, the first ever for Lucama School. It is very appropriate that Hugh’s career would allow him to be part of three state baseball championships in the small town of Lucama, once as a coach and twice as the principal of the school.
Lucama School was truly Hugh’s destiny. It brought him together with his wife who came to Lucama in 1961 as a student teacher. Both Hugh’s daughters attended the Lucama School as elementary students.
As a storied basketball coach for the boys’ and girls’ teams, he completed his coaching career with over 327 wins. In 1966-1967, he was voted Wilson County Coach of the Year by the conference coaches, the first recipient to be given this award.
Among his other accomplishments were; member of the Board of Directors – North Carolina High School Association, president of Wilson County Principal’s Association, Recipient of Lucama Jaycee Award, Principal of the Year in 1989, Outstanding Citizen of the Year Woodman of the World 1990, Recipient of the Charles “Red” Barrett Award Wilson County Hot Stove League in 1993.
He was former Commissioner of the Town of Lucama, Past Master of Lucama Masonic Lodge 527, past member of the Usher Board of Little Rock Free Will Baptist Church, member of the Selective Service Board for Wilson and Greene County for 20 years, and Member of the Personnel Committee of Little Rock OFWB Church. He was board member of the Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department for 20 plus years.
To those whose lives he touched, he will forever be a part of them. He was a person who taught that success was not an accident but rather a goal to work harder than anyone else, to stick to the basics, to execute as well as possible, to be self-confident, self-assured, and to never, ever quit.
He will live in the hearts, minds, and souls of all young boys’ and girls’ lives he touched, all the kids who became men and women under “Coach”.
He leaves to cherish his memories, wife of 55 years, Annette; his beloved daughters, Kim and Karin; his devoted son-in-law, John Joyner; sister, Lou Ellen Flowers and brother, William Darron Flowers and wife, Mary Lee all of Fremont; several nieces and nephews; his brother-in-law, Chuck Fuller and his extended family, Betty Joyner.
The celebration of his life is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Parkway, Wilson with the Rev. Buddy Sasser and Rev. Kelley Smart officiating. Visitation will follow the service at Joyner’s Funeral Home. A graveside service with Masonic Rites accorded by Lucama Lodge Masonic #527 will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be directed to the Lucama Masonic Lodge #527, P.O. Box 134, Lucama, NC 27851.
