Jeremiah "Jerry" Mathewson

Jeremiah “Jerry” Mathewson passed away into God’s hands on Thursday, December 5, 2024.

Jerry was a loving husband, an ever-present and special father, an amazing grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. He was an all-around “good guy”.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters, Sheri Satterwhite and husband, Bynum and Kim Brown and husband, Scott; grandchildren, Matt Satterwhite and wife, Mariah, Katherine Atkins and husband, Tray, Elizabeth “Liza” Satterwhite, Elizabeth Brown, and Will Brown; great-grandchildren, Harper Atkins, Liam Satterwhite, with an estimated time of arrival on December 18, 2024; sister, Charlotte Knoke and husband, Scott; brothers, James Mathewson and Thomas Mathewson; nieces and nephews, Chelsea Brown, Alex Brown, James Knoke, Robert Knoke, Chris Knoke and Anne-Elizabeth Knoke; his in-laws, Leslie Brown and Douglas Brown and wife, Andrea.

His extended family ranges from Charleston, South Carolina to Austin Texas, Danville, Virginia, Milton Delaware, and Exton, Pennsylvania.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Virginia Mathewson.

Jerry worked for James I. Miller, then Standard Commercial Tobacco (now Alliance One). He was a vice president with responsibility for accounts in Thailand, Korea, India, Singapore, South American, and South Africa.

He was an amazing delegate for intercultural engagement and détente. His friends, colleagues, competitors, and customers around the world knew and loved Jerry. He was always ready to help a friend or to start a party.

He loved people and they loved him. He was an original official southern gentleman and overall good guy. His uniform was topsiders, khakis, and a blue shirt. He loved making people laugh and was an excellent storyteller.

He was an active member of Tabernacle Methodist Church in Stantonsburg and a past member of Wilson Elks.

The past fifteen years Jerry has been living on a farm in Stantonsburg. Beyond using the tractor, mowing grass, and sitting on the porch with a cold drink and friend, Jerry spent wonderful hours with BOO, a brown chunk of a dog with golden eyes. Some might say that Jerry rescued BOO. We know that BOO rescued Jerry. Together they rode everywhere in “BOO’s truck”.

The family sends special thanks to the emergency trauma team, ER staff, ICU staff (4C), palliative care and hospice team at ECU Health. They provided professional and compassionate care to Jerry and his family.

No services are planned at this time.

Condolences directed to Joyner’s Funeral Home and Crematory at www.joyners.net.
