Joan Thorne Stott
July 1, 1932 – March 31, 2015
Joan Thorne Stott, 82, was born July 1, 1932. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Joan was a giving and compassionate woman and will be missed by all who knew her. She loved children and was a devoted teacher for over twenty-nine years. Her first year was at West Edgecombe in Edgecombe County. Most of her teaching career was in Wilson County at Gardners Elementary School. In 1973 – 1974 she represented Wilson County and District Twelve as Teacher of the Year. Post-polio syndrome forced her to retire before completing her thirtieth year. Joan was a member of the National Education Association, the North Carolina Education Association, retired school personnel, AARP, The Gideon’s International and a member of the Sheriff’s S.A.L.T. Council. She was a member of Pleasant Hope Missionary Baptist Church where she served her Lord and was the church treasurer for several years.
Joan is survived by her husband of sixty-two years of the home, Groves Stott; her son, Quintin Stott and wife, Jackie of Elm City and her grandchildren, Justin Stott of Elm City and Suzanne Stott Colbert and husband, Andra of Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mavis and Ernest Thorne, her sister, Doris Thorne; her brother, Horace M. Thorne, and sister-in-law, Betty A. Thorne.
Joan’s funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in Maplewood Cemetery. The Rev. Johnny Hendricks and the Rev. David Allen will officiate.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening immediately following the service at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway and other times at the home.
