Joann Sams Whitson May 10, 1947 – December 26, 2019 Joann Sams Whitson, 72 of Elm City passed away Thursday. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 Sunday in Maplewood Cemetery, 400 College Road, Wilson. The Rev. Sonny Griswald will officiate. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 1 – 2 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson. Joann is survived by her sons, David Allen Whitson and special daughter, Valerie of Wilson, Edward Dwayne Whitson of Elm City and Tracy Joe Whitson of Elm City; granddaughters, Taylor Whitson and Allison Webb; grandsons, Matthew Whitson, Terry Whitson (Linn), Dustin Whitson and Christopher Whitson; great-granddaughter, Makenzie; great-grandsons, Hunter, Justin and Chason and Brayden; sisters, Sadie Moss, Betty Muse and Pauline Sams all of Asheville and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Josiah and Elizabeth Ellison Sams; sisters, Georgia Lunsford, Louise Sams and Irene Sams and her brother, Edward Sams.
