John Herbert Patteson

John Herbert (“Jack”) Patteson, age 81, of Wilson, died peacefully Monday, May 9, 2016 at Wilson Memorial Hospital, surrounded by family. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Maplewood Cemetery. The Rev. Phil Byrum will officiate.
The family will receive friends at a lunch reception that will immediately follow at the Elks Lodge, 2814 Fieldstream Drive, Wilson.
Born in Petersburg, Virginia on June 18, 1934, Mr. Patteson was the son of Robert Baskerville Patteson and Frances Mann Patteson. He graduated from Charles L. Coon High School in Wilson and then served in the United States Army, being honorably discharged in 1955. Mr. Patteson attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and later attended Atlantic Christian College. Mr. Patteson married Nancy Campbell Cutts in 1959 and lived in Wilson where he was a respected executive in the tobacco industry in companies including A.C. Monk and Company, Thorpe Greenville, and Sykes Tobacco Company.
Mr. Patteson was a devoted husband and father and a loyal friend. He was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge in Wilson and enjoyed playing cards with his many friends. An avid fisherman and hunter, he particularly delighted in hunting deer with his grandson, Joe.
Mr. Patteson is survived by his son, John Herbert Patteson, Jr. and wife, Della of Denver, Colorado; his daughter, Frances Patteson Luter and husband, Joe of Virginia Beach, Virginia; his four grandchildren, Joseph Williamson Luter V, Stuart Glascoe Luter, Elizabeth Campbell Patteson, and Mary Davis Patteson; his nieces and nephews, of the Patteson, Dixon, Chapman, and Samuels families; and his cousins in the Ryan family.
He is predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Nancy Campbell Cutts Patteson; and his two brothers, Robert Baskerville Patteson, Jr. and James Craig Patteson.
Mr. Patteson requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elks Lodge in Wilson or the Salvation Army of Wilson.
