John Thomas “J.T.” Bass, Jr., 80, of Lucama passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2025. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Joyner’s Funeral Home with Masonic Rites following in Maplewood Cemetery. Dr. Rev. DeWayne Eakes will officiate.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, March 28, 2025, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson and other times at the residence.
John Thomas graduated from Lucama High School in 1962. He was a member of the 1962 Basketball team that won the Wilson County Championship. “J.T” was a member of the FFA. He attended Chowan College and Atlantic Christian College and served in the US Army National Guard, C22 A.I.T. Platoon 4 and was stationed in Fort Ord, California. John Thomas was a member of the Lucama Methodist Church, where he served his Lord faithfully. He was a member of Lucama Masonic Lodge #527 and Mt. Lebanon Masonic Lodge #712 of Wilson. John Thomas was the Past Master of Lucama Lodge #527 in 1984, 2003 and 2007. A member of Scottish Rite Bodies of New Bern, 32nd Degree Mason, and he was a member of Sudan Temple of New Bern and the Wilson County Shrine Club. In 1977 he was the Jaycee of the Year of the Lucama Chapter. John had many nicknames, “Jumping” J.T. Bass, Jr., “Too Tall” and “Big John”. He was a leaf buyer for Export and British American Tobacco Company from 1967 – 2000. John Thomas was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
John Thomas is survived by his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Sue Moore Bass; son, John “Tee” Thomas Bass, III; daughter, April Bass Furr and husband, Ben; grandson, Jackson Thomas Furr and granddaughter, Georgia Katelyn Furr.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas Bass and Nina Darden Bass.
