With profound sadness, we announce the untimely passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Judy Carol Phillips, who departed from this world too soon after a short battle with cancer.
Born on December 29, 1954, in Wilson, NC, Judy spent her formative years surrounded by the charm of southern hospitality. Her infectious laughter and nurturing spirit cultivated joy and happiness, turning every moment into a cherished memory and a lasting mark on the hearts of all who had the honor of knowing her. Her journey through life was marked by a passion for children and art which lead her to attain a degree in Commercial Design with a focus on Elementary Education from Atlantic Christian (now Barton) College in 1978.
After growing up in Wilson, NC, she married and then began her family while living in Atlantic Beach, NC. Later moving to Richmond, VA, Judy spent the next twenty-five years dedicating her time to raising her children and volunteering her time and talents to help others in the community. Some of her volunteer roles included Girl Scout leader, fundraising chair, cheerleading coach, disabled-children camp counselor, and arts-and-crafts coordinator for numerous organizations. Judy was also actively involved in local art festivals, adding her creative touch to the community. She finally resettled in Wilson again where she spent her time enjoying friends and family until her passing on January 5, 2024.
A woman of boundless energy and selflessness, Judy had the remarkable ability to be everywhere in life and go where she was needed most. Her nurturing spirit extended to all aspects of her life - she was always taking care of those around her and leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion.
Art and creativity were an enormous part of who Judy was, and her passion for those was the foundation of many of the roles she would hold throughout her professional life. She worked as a creative designer, visual merchandise manager, graphic designer, teacher, and office manager to name a few. As an artist, Judy once shared, "I love being an artist; it gives me purpose. It allows me to color outside the lines; there are no rules... you create your own."
She is survived by her devoted children, Jennifer Rose Tate (Jeb) and James Morris “Trey” Rose, III, her adoring grandchildren, Alyssa Joli Rose, Jamie Leigh Tate, and James Braxton Rose, and her sister Linda Phillips Pope and brother Fred Phillips. Judy is preceded in death by her mother, Callie Winders Phillips, her father, Charles L. Phillips, and her brother, Frank Phillips.
Visitation for Judy will be held on Saturday, January 13th, from 9-11 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 202 Kincaid Ave N, Wilson, NC 27893. The memorial service will take place at the church, commencing at 11 a.m. If anyone would like to send flowers, please contact Wilson Flowers & Market at (252)-991-6104.
As we mourn the loss of our beloved Judy, let us remember her for the joy she brought into our lives, the love she shared, and the lasting impact of her kindness. May her soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory be a source of comfort and strength during this difficult time.
