Lewis Willard Whitehead

Lewis Willard Whitehead, Jr. went to meet his Lord Jesus on April 22, 2025.

Lewis was born on January 19, 1944, in Newport News, Virigina to Mary Roscoe Gillam and Lewis W. Whitehead, Sr. Lewis was raised in Windsor, North Carolina. He was a very proud graduate of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Lewis was a loyal Tar Heel, anyone that knew him was sure of it. Lewis’ father, two uncles, and maternal and paternal grandfathers all graduated from Carolina, as his granddaughter did. Go Heels!

Lewis is survived by his wife, Carol Davis Whitehead of forty years; two step-sons, James Allen Nicholson and wife, Fracnee of Elkton, Virginia, and William Henry Nicholson and wife, Melissa of Leicester, North Carolina; daughter-in-law, Danielle Nicholson of Wilmington, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Meghan and husband, Zack of Elkton, Virginia, Madison, Gabriel, and Javis Nicholson of Denver, Colorado, Summer, Kiera, Hannah Nicholson of Wilmington, North Carolina; two precious great-grandchildren twins, Ada Jane and AJ Cardin of Elkton, Virginia, last but never least, Toshie, Lewis’ faithful puppy.

Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Clifford Alexander Whitehead and his step-son, Frank Craig Nicholson, III.

Lewis had a successful career in accounting in Wilson and Kinston. He was an avid boater and fisherman in the waters around Atlantic Beach. He and his family spent many happy days at the beach.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 28, 2025, at Joyner’s Funeral Home, Wilson. Rev. Brian Tippett will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 12 – 12:45 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.
