Margarita S. Piper

Margarita “Maggi” Sherertz Piper, 92, of Wilson, NC passed away Thursday, December 20 at Wilson Pines. She was born December 20, 1926 in Petersburg, VA to the late Guy Lucas Sherertz and Olga Akers Sherertz.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 29 at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in Culpeper National Cemetery, Culpeper, Virginia. The Rev. Charles Robl will officiate.
Mrs. Piper attended public schools in Lynchburg, VA, graduating from E. C. Glass High School in 1944. She received her bachelor’s degree from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. She later received her masters and educational specialist degrees from the University of Virginia.
After graduating from college in 1948, she joined the C&P Telephone Company in Washington, DC rising through the ranks as business office service representative, administrative assistant, training supervisor, and business office supervisor. She left the company in 1962 due to the impending birth of her first child. The family moved to Culpeper, VA in 1968. In 1970, Mrs. Piper accepted a position as a second grade teacher at Sycamore Park Elementary School, later becoming director of the reading lab. In 1980 she became the assistant principal at Rappahannock County Elementary School. She was appointed principal the following year. In 1987 she was promoted and transferred to the school board office as Director of Pupil Personnel/Special Services where she remained until her retirement in 1995.
Mrs. Piper held, at various times, memberships in various local, state and national education associations. She was an active member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Culpeper for 35 years where she sang in the choir, served on the Vestry as register, senior warden, and scribe, was substitute organist and a member of various committees. After moving to Wilson, NC, she transferred her membership to First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Mark Stephen Piper and his wife Linda Lamm Piper both of Wilson, NC and a daughter, Susan Piper Weathersbee and her husband, Retired Col. Timothy Allen Weathersbee both of San Antonio, Texas. Additional survivors include five grandchildren: Brett Thomas Piper, Kylie Jo Piper, David Jackson Piper, Shae Rose Weathersbee and Jared Brice Weathersbee.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Glenn Clair Piper, her parents, and six half-brothers and sisters: Victoria Foster, Louise Smith, Charles Sherertz, Alvin Sherertz, Lewin Sherertz, and John Sherertz.
