Marion Edward Poythress

Marion Edward “Shorty” Poythress, 89, of Wilson passed Friday. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday in Evergreen Memorial Park. The Navy Chaplin will officiate. After graduating from Charles L. Coon in 1943 he joined the Amphibious Forces in the US Navy. He was stationed on the USS Barnett APA – 5 where he toured in Normandy, Southern France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa during War World II. Shorty was a member of American Legion Post #13, Veterans Foreign War Post 6651 and 40/8. Shorty was a business man in Wilson and Dare County. He was owner and operator of Wilson Welding and Machine Shop until 1972 and then Mann’s Harbor Marina and Motel in Manns Harbor until 1999 when he and his wife retired and returned to Wilson. Over the years he enjoyed Nascar Racing and had a passion for fishing. Shorty is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Mary Ann Poythress of the home; his daughters, Vickie Anning of Wilson and Kathy House and husband, Richard of Jacksonville; his granddaughters, Lisa Morris and husband, Ronnie of Vanceboro and Christy Gurgone, husband, Jimmy of Wilson and Kim Ivey and husband, Stevie of Bailey; his grandsons, Clay Anning of Wilson and Todd Sutton and wife, Tammy of Wilson; several great-grandchildren; his sister, Ann Poythress of Atlanta, Georgia; his nephew, Brent Williams and wife, Shirah of Atlanta and his brother-in-law, Bruce Williams of Atlanta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Suzzette Sutton; his parents, Merrion and Bessie Poythress and his sister, Judy Williams. In lieu of flowers, Shorty has requested memorials to be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675; the American Legion Post 13, 2035 Hwy 301 S, Wilson, NC 27893 or the VFW of Wilson, 4303 Ward Blvd, Wilson, NC 27893.
