Mike began working for Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company, when it was owned by the Holderness family in Tarboro and continued as it was bought by Sprint, Embarq and Century Link. He retired in 2007 after forty-two years with the phone companies.
Mike loved canoeing and kayaking and being outdoors. For several years he was a member of the Wilson R.C. Modelers flying club and a group of friends sailing remote control sailboats at Lake Wilson. Mike enjoyed building his own airplanes, including one modeled after Superman, which was used to drop candy for kids on family days at the flying field. Later when Macular Degeneration took away most of his eyesight, he loved working in his workshop building wind spinners and other items just for fun. Mike was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

Harrell and husband, Wayne, and his brother, Walter Leggett and wife, Donna.
