Nellie Gray Varnell Mattox

Nellie Gray Varnell Mattox April 11, 1925 – January 25, 2018 Nellie Gray Varnell Mattox, 92, of Lucama passed away Thursday. Her funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, Wilson. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Wilson. The Rev. Shawn Garnett will officiate. The family will receive friends Monday prior to the service from 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson and other times at the home. Nellie was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and a friend to all that knew her. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Nellie is survived by her sons, Ray Mattox and wife, Mary Ellen of Wilson, and Garland Mattox and wife, Bertha of Lucama; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren, and her special daughter-in-law, Diane Mattox. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Allen Mattox; her sons, Troy Gray Mattox and David Harold Mattox; parents, Wilkes Gray and Cora Lee Jenkins Varnell, and four sisters.
