Richard "Dick" Hoyt Gurkin

Richard “Dick” Hoyt Gurkin, 89, of Wilson passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2024. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church, 207 Tarboro Street NE, Wilson. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Wilson. Rev. Scott Schieber will officiate.

 The family will receive friends immediately following the church service at First Christian Church, Wilson.

 Dick graduated from Charles L. Coon High School and was in the graduating class of 1956 with Atlantic Christian College where he studied math and business administration. He served his country with honor and pride as a LTJG in the United States Navy. He retired from BB&T as a Purchasing Officer. Dick served as an Elder, Deacon, Treasurer and a Sunday school teacher at First Christian Church and was a faithful servant. He was a faithful volunteer at First Christian Church, and he always helped others first. Although Dick was a first cousin, he was fondly referred to as “Uncle Dick” by Jimmy’s children and grandchildren and was always the “Guest of Honor” during family holiday gatherings.

 Richard is survived by his first cousin, James “Jimmy” Clark Gurkin and wife, Paula of Wilson; their children, Michele Castillo and husband, John and Candice Woolard and husband, Skeet; their grandchildren, Sara, Tyler, Nathan, Syndee, and Joshua; Clayton and Nelda Bardin his lifetime friends and his special friend, JoAnn Near.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, Bushrod Clark Gurkin and Estelle Gurkin.
