Robert Earl Scott, 78 of Wilson passed away Thursday, September 14. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 23 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2615 Tilghman Road, Wilson. Interment will follow immediately at Westview Cemetery, 917 Cleveland Drive, Kinston. Bishop Criswell will officiate.
Family will receive friends on Friday, September 22 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson and at other times at the home.
At the tender young age of fourteen (upon the death of his father), Robert had to help his mother assume the farming operations and other household responsibilities. Robert had a voracious drive and determination that he used to maintain the heavy load of balancing family, a full-time job, and being a full-time student at East Carolina University. He successfully obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management in 1972. Robert used that same drive and determination to become a successful State Farm Agent of 40 years, while also owning and operating many other business ventures. His motto was “Where much is given, much is expected”. He had a true servant’s heart and an innate desire to bless others with his knowledge, experience, and resources.
Robert loved spending time with his family, where he would often take them on spontaneous camping and fishing trips. He enjoyed playing golf, Carolina basketball games, and was an avid baseball fan. He was a former Bishop and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for 60 years, where he devoted his time and talents serving the Lord, doing family history, and working in the Temple.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jean Carol Scott of the home; daughter, Cheryl Dean Scott of Wilson; son, Derrick Matthew Scott of Wilson; daughter, Sharon DeLane Jones and husband, Brian of Pink Hill; son, Devron Allen Scott and wife, Melissa of Wilson; daughter, Sherry DeAnne Worrell and husband, Jody of Bailey; sisters, Pam Eubanks of Kinston and Gail Smith of Dudley; seventeen grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Jacob Earl Scott; his mother, Charlotte Metts Scott McArthur; sister, Linda Scott Smith; and his step-father, Herman Matthew McArthur.
