Sandra Horne Benton Griffin

It is with sadness that the family of Sandra Horne Benton Griffin announces her passing on Saturday, October 07, 2023.

She will be remembered by her brother, John Horne (Lisa) of Beaufort, SC and sister, Jane Brinson (Ron) of Cedar Point, NC and their children, Michael Biesecker (Claire), Adam Horne (Leigh Anne), Alex Horne (Margaret), John Brinson, William Brinson (Sabina) and Anna Brinson (Brock) and numerous great nieces and nephews whom she adored.  She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Steve Benton of Wilson.  Sandra surrounded herself with a host of caring neighbors and lifelong friends and loved her very special cousins, Doris Pruitt and Russ Powell (Myra) and their children.

She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Henry Edwin Benton, Jr. 

Sandra was born in Wilson, NC to John and Pluma Horne.  She attended Wilson County Public Schools and graduated from Fike High School.  She obtained a BS from Atlantic Christian College and later an MA from East Carolina University.  She also completed post-graduate work at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.

She dedicated her professional career to public education as a teacher, President of the Wake County NCAE, Early Literacy Specialist for the North Carolina Teacher Academy, and concluded her career as Associate Director of the North Carolina Teacher Academy with the UNC System. 

A graveside service will be held November 11, 2023 at 11 am in Maplewood Cemetery Wilson NC.  A visitation will be held following the service in the parlor of First Christian Church, 207 Tarboro Street E Wilson NC.  Joyner’s Funeral Home of Wilson will be assisting with the arrangements.

Memorials in Sandra’s name may be donated to the charity of your choice.
