Sara Van De Grift Strickland
January 25, 1934 – August 16, 2013
Sara Van De Grift Strickland, 79, of Lucama passed away Friday. The family will receive friends 3 – 3:45 p.m. Sunday at Spring Hill Presbyterian Church, 7335 Springfield School Road, Lucama with funeral services starting at 4 p.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Sefton Strickland and the Strickland family will be conducting the service. Sara was born in Columbia, SC to the late Dr. Everett Russell Van De Grift, Jr. and Rosalind Maxwell Van De Grift. She was a saint and savior to every living creature both two and four legged. She was a devoted wife and mother. She worked actively in the Presbyterian Women and worked as the right hand of Sefton for 59 years. Sara’s favorite hobby was “collecting friends” and her favorite season was “every day is God’s Gift.” She worked for the Salvation Army in Sanford for ten years. Sara is survived by her husband, Rev. Dr. Sefton Strickland; daughters, Debora McEwen and husband, Chip of Fort Myers, FL and Angelia Strickland of Olivia; sons, Sefton B. Strickland III and wife, Darlene of West End, Scott Strickland of Naples, FL and Russell Strickland and Amanda of Carthage; grandchildren, Terry, David, Zach, Amber, Joshua, Katie, Kristen, Silas, Samuel and Sefton; one great-granddaughter; siblings, Dr. E.R. Van De Grift and wife, Brenda of Columbia, SC and Dorothy V. Raxter and husband, Dale of Virginia Beach, VA; nieces and nephews, Dale, Rosalind, Trisha, Stephanie, Melanie, Edward, Kimberly, Justin, Todd and Emily; her best friends, Chester and Daisy; and all the many wonderful people of the community.
