ROCKY MOUNT — Sarah Elizabeth Dickerman Evans — granddaughter of Sarah Elizabeth Gold Swindell and great-great granddaughter of Sarah Elizabeth Gott White of Leesburg, Va., — passed away quietly on Saturday in the care of her friend Brenda Jackson and Hospice care.

Sarah, 68, is the namesake and granddaughter of Sarah Elizabeth Gold Swindell, the late editor and publisher of The Wilson Daily Times.

Sarah was born in Meriden, Conn. Her family moved to Delaware and later to Leesburg before finding their home in Wilson.

She is the great-granddaughter of John Daniel Gold, founder of The Wilson Times, which is now in its fifth generation of ownership under Morgan Paul Dickerman III.  Gold founded The Wilson Times, a weekly publication, in 1896, using printing equipment owned by his father, Elder P.D. Gold, a Primitive Baptist minister and publisher of a church publication, Zion’s Landmark. The paper went daily in 1902.

Sarah graduated from Fike High School and Weber College. She attended Atlantic Christian College.

She was proud of raising her children, her work as a teacher’s assistant at Charles L. Coon Middle school, her ownership of a laundry mat in Elm City and her strong Christian faith.

Sarah was a debutante, making her debut in 1965.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Paul Dickerman II and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Dickerman of Wallingford, Conn.

Sarah is survived by her sons, Robert Paul Evans of Wilson County and Donald Wayne Evans and wife Kari of Minnesota; sister, Alice Dickerman Adams of Destin, Fla.; brother, Morgan Paul Dickerman III and wife Rosa of Wilson; grandchildren, Zachary Thomas Cox Evans and Jordan Paul Evans, both of Greenville, N.C., and Mason Alan Taylor–Evans of St. Paul, Minn.; nephew, Morgan Paul Dickerman IV of Wilson; and niece, Troy Gold Dickerman of Wilson.

Joyner’s Funeral Home of Wilson is in charge of arrangements. The funeral will be private.
