Susan Simmons Koster

Susan Simmons Koster August 12, 1948 – May 16, 2018 Susan Simmons Koster, 69, of Wilson, NC passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018. A native of Southampton County Virginia, Susan lived her adult life in Wilson. Susan is survived by her loving husband of forty-eight years, John Gray Koster, Sr.; her sons, John Gray Koster, Jr. and wife, Paige, Stephen Frank Koster and wife, Anne Stuart, and William Camp Koster and wife, Mary Hunter; her grandchildren, John Gray Koster, III, Miles Thomas Koster, Griffin Frank Koster, Della Ruth Koster, Jackson Camp Koster, and Eva Grace Koster; sisters, Linda Simmons Hallstead and husband, Tom, and Kathy Simmons Clay and husband, Louis, and her brothers, William Butts Simmons, IV and wife, Lynn, and Thomas Briggs Simmons and wife, Kathy. Additionally, Susan is survived by one aunt, Margaret Simmons Horton, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Butts and Edna Hundley Simmons. Susan was a graduate of Louisburg College and a Business graduate of Atlantic Christian College. She was the Past President of the Junior Women’s Club of Wilson, and an active member of FUMC. Susan had a passion for art, painting, gardening, golf, tennis, reading and traveling with friends and family. She loved the beach, dancing, cooking and celebrating life. She enjoyed playing the piano and immersing herself in music. Susan was the best multi-tasker anyone has ever known. Susan will be remembered as a beloved and devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and friend. She was a woman of God, the picture of moral character, hope and strength. Her priority was to provide the most unconditional love to all who knew and loved her. In the will of God, there is no higher calling than to be a wife and mother. This defines the heart of Susan. She took pride daily in her husband, three sons, six precious grandchildren, and three daughters-in-love and is eternally grateful for the full life she had with them. Her friends describe her as “the sweetest person” they have ever known. In the eyes of those who have been blessed to know her, she surely sets the standard high. To make a home, be united with a man in glorifying God, to nurture, tend the lives of children and grandchildren, to deny oneself and lay down one’s life on behalf of others, there is no greater calling or joy. This defined her life here on earth. Susan was a breast cancer survivor. Experiencing her last year with pancreatic cancer, the family would like to thank her team of doctors, nurses, and friends who cared for her and especially the Pancreatic Center at Duke. She was always appreciative of the work of their hearts and hands. Her memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 100 W Green Street, Wilson, NC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Asbury Hall. The Rev. Bob Bergland and Rev. Charles Robl will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials in Susan’s memory to First United Methodist Church, 100 W Green Street, Wilson, North Carolina 27893 or The American Cancer Society, 930 Wellness Drive, Greenville, North Carolina 27834.
