Vera Scanlan Cockrell July 29, 1918 - June 2, 2014

Vera Scanlan Cockrell, 95, formerly of Wilson, passed away Monday in Danville, Va. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Therese Catholic Church, 700 Nash Street West, Wilson. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The Rev. Gregory Lowchy will officiate.

The family will receive friends 7 – 9 p.m. Friday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.

Vera is survived by her daughters, Teri Andrus and husband, Paul of Kitty Hawk and Jane Cockrell and husband, George Hartner of Hampstead; her sons, Jack Cockrell and wife, Anne of Danville, VA, Doug Cockrell and wife, Leslie of Wake Forest and David Cockrell of Greenville, SC; her grandchildren, Quinn Andrus, Spencer Andrus, Caitlin Andrus Prysock, Zeke Hartner, Aaron Cockrell, Woody Cockrell and Watson Cockrell; her great-grandson, Silas Andrus and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, of fifty-one years, Johnnie Cockrell; they lived in Wilson until his death in 2001; her granddaughter, Alex Hartner; her parents, Catherine Dwyer and Joseph Michael Scanlan; her sister, Kitty S. Taylor and her brothers, Joe, Jack, and Bill Scanlan.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Danville, VA for all of the loving care and support to Vera.
