Verna Lee Mattox
September 12, 1925 – April 18, 2015
Verna Lee Mattox, 89, of Wilson passed away Saturday. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at West Nash United Methodist Church, 2200 W. Nash Street, Wilson. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The Rev. Stuart Milton and the Rev. William Holliday will officiate.
The family will receive friends 7 – 9 p.m. Monday evening at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.
Verna is survived by a son, Gordon Mattox and grandson, Clayton; a daughter, Toni McKeel and son-in-law, Michael McKeel and grandsons, Brandon McKeel, Christopher McKeel (Abbie), and Nicholas McKeel (Jenna); two great-grandchildren, Mattox McKeel and Madilynn Grace McKeel; a sister, Doris Baxley of Rockingham; and a sister-in-law, Miriam Lamm of Kenly.
She was preceded in death by her husband of thirty-eight years, Thomas Mattox; her parents, Bruce and Minnie Lamm; two brothers, Gerald and Etheridge Lamm; and a sister, Margie Mercer.
Verna was a registered nurse and worked at Woodard Herring Hospital until the time in which she and her husband formed Tom’s Sausage Company which stayed in operation for forty-three years. Verna and her husband were charter members of West Nash United Methodist Church. She dearly loved her church and was an active member for fifty-five years until her death. Verna served as a role model to family and friends by her joyful and positive attitude in which she faced life’s many challenges. Through her caring and loving nature, her true Christian values were exemplified.
