Vicki Stott Fulghum
July 21, 1940 – August 7, 2018
Vicki Stott Fulghum, 78, of Wilson passed away Tuesday at The Pines Nursing Home. Her funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 11, 2018. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The Rev. Steve Clayton will officiate.
The family will receive friends 10:00 – 10:45 a.m., prior to service at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.
Vicki was born on July 21, 1940 to Polly Freeman and Henry Roland Stott. She graduated from Charles L. Coon High School and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Education at Barton College, formerly Atlantic Christian College. She taught elementary school for 34 years, leaving a legacy for many former students who flourished thanks to her commitment and patience as an educator.
She married Mickey Larry Fulghum and they were blessed with a son, Stephen Robert, in 1971. Their family was a part of the fabric of the Westwood neighborhood for many years as Vicki welcomed neighbors and Stephen’s friends into their home and on their front porch.
Vicki balanced teaching and raising a family with service to others. She was president of the Wilson Junior Woman’s Club and also a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Wilson. She took care of her parents in their later years, nursing both of them in the home.
When Mickey passed away at the early age of 48, Vicki mourned and then bravely tackled life as a widow, supporting Stephen as he finished college and set out on this own.
Stephen married Andrea and Vicki rejoiced when they had their daughter and her granddaughter Ryleigh, whom she adored. Even when she couldn’t visit them in Charlotte, due to her failing health, she loved hearing stores about Ryleigh’s school activities and seeing photos of the family.
She had a gentle heart, especially for animals, and usually was providing sustenance for a number of strays in addition to her own pets. When she had to move from her home to the nursing home, she remained concerned about the animals she had cared for.
Vicki is survived by her son, Stephen Robert Fulghum and wife, Andrea; granddaughter, Ryleigh; as well as her dear friends, Connie and Larry Mitchell, who were like a sister and brother to her through the years. She also leaves behind many other faithful and extended family members who lived, laughed, loved and sometimes cried with her and will miss her dearly.
The family is especially grateful for the nursed and staff at The Pines Nursing Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The First Baptist Church of Wilson, 311 Nash Street North, Wilson, North Carolina 27893
