Virginia Barnes Campbell January 20, 1923 – January 15, 2017   Virginia Barnes Campbell died peacefully Sunday morning at Autumn Care of Nash at the age of 93, and was one of eight children born to Oscar and Dollie Barnes of Wilson. In 1944, she married Edward Graham Campbell, Jr., of Lucama. Virginia and Ed met in Wilson, and in their 52 years of marriage they lived in Tarboro, Greensboro, Wilson and of course Rocky Mount. Ed was a pharmacist at May & Gorham Drug Store and Raper Drugs of Rocky Mount, and in 1997 he preceded Virginia in death. Virginia was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Rocky Mount for 60 years where she co-founded the “In Betweens” fellowship group 40 years ago, a group of friends whom she cherished dearly and whom she enjoyed organizing events for year after year. Survivors include sons, Edward Graham Campbell, III, and wife, Phyllis Hicks Campbell of Rocky Mount and William Stanley Campbell and wife, Georgia Hobbins Campbell of Chapel Hill; grandsons, Stuart Campbell of Wilmington and Nathan Campbell of Chapel Hill; granddaughter, Maria Campbell of Chapel Hill, and sisters, Marie Shealy of Wilson and Ann Kennedy of Greenville. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 16, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the home of Graham and Phyllis Campbell, 3524 Chelsea Drive, Rocky Mount. A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, January 17 at 11:00 a.m. in Maplewood Cemetery, Wilson. The Rev. Chris Berardi and Rev. Mary Kathleen Duncan will officiate. The family is grateful for the love and support of her friends and extended family, and for the loving care provided at her home by Stephanie Goodwin, Mollie Taylor and Marie Robinson; Dr. Donald Bales and Susan Collier for years of health care; Dr. Broderick Bello and the staffs of Nash General Hospital and Autumn Care of Nash; to her neighbors who provided attention to her special needs and, most especially, to her nephew-in-law, Bill Gregory of Rocky Mount and his family for their ongoing love and assistance over many decades. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 153 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount, North Carolina, 27804, or the Virginia and Edward Campbell Pharmacy Scholarship Endowment Fund, UNC-Chapel Hill Development Office, P.O. Box 309, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 27514, which provides scholarships to pharmacy students primarily from Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson counties.
