Virginia Elizabeth "Genny" Starnes

Virginia (Genny) Elizabeth Starnes, nee Crumpler, 85, of Elkmont, AL passed away on February 23rd, 2025. Virginia was born September 5, 1939, to Raymond David Crumpler, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Williams Crumpler in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Starnes, Jr.; brother, Raymond David Crumpler, Jr. and sister-in-law, Joyce Pate Crumpler and sister, Judy Crumpler Pate.

Genny grew up on a family farm near Pikeville, NC and graduated from Pikeville High school where she excelled as a basketball player. Starting her career at the American National Bank in Chicago, Genny retired as a bookkeeper in a career spanning nearly 60 years. As a military spouse, she used her bookkeeping skills at many locations around the country, and in Italy and Norway. She was known for her warm smile, a personality large enough to fill any space, a flair for decorating and entertaining, and the gift of hospitality. She was always a vibrant host to strangers, friends, and family. Genny loved the adventure of travel and cherished the time spent traveling throughout the U.S. and abroad with her husband. 

 A woman of faith, Genny was active and vibrant member of the churches she attended over the years.

 Surviving are son, Stephen Craig Herring (Rita); step-daughter, Tanya Byrn (David); grandsons, Taylor Cody Herring (Chelsea), Jack Andrew Mullinax (Carly), David Byrn Jr.; granddaughter, Erin Byrn Arent and six great grandchildren; sisters, Joan Brogden and Linda Crumpler Pike.

 Visitation will be Friday, March 14th, at Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Pkwy, Wilson, NC, from 6-8pm. A graveside service will be held at 11am Saturday, March 15, 2025 in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, 3888 US Hwy 70, Goldsboro, North Carolina.
