Walter Franklin Inscoe, Jr.
June 9, 1927 – July 4, 2018
Walter Franklin “Doug” Inscoe, Jr., 91, of Wilson passed away Wednesday. His funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Grace Baptist Church. A reception will follow the service. The Rev. Steve Strickland will officiate.
The family will receive friends 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at Grace Baptist Church, 202 N. Kincaid Avenue, Wilson and other times at the home.
At the age of 15 Walter joined the Navy in April 1943. He left the service in December 1945 for about one year, and then rejoined the Army Air Corps in April 1947 which changed over into the Air Force in 1948. He retired after 27 years of active service in 1971 as a Chief Master Sergeant, and then served 3 years in the reserve completing his 30 years of service. During his career he served as a Navy gunner aboard merchant ships during WWII in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and ended the war in the Pacific. While in the Air Force he served in Vietnam where he received the Bronze Star, also numerous service medals (were from all different branches of service) of accommodations. He mainly worked in the Maintenance area servicing B29, B36, B52 and several other aircraft. After retiring from the Air Force he returned to Roanoke Rapids where he began his own business doing wallpaper and painting which he retired from in 1993. He was a 32nd degree Mason. After retirement he and his wife, Mildred enjoyed traveling. He married Barbara Bryant in 2012 and traveled across the USA during the 6 years they had together.
Walter enjoyed gardening, bowling, playing corn hole and going to the YMCA. He was active in his church, Grace Baptist, where he served many years as a deacon. He enjoyed helping remodel several areas of the church. His special love at the church was the youth and choir.
Walter is survived by his wife, Barbara Bryant Inscoe of the home; son, Doug Inscoe and wife, Michele of Wilson; grandchildren, Corey Inscoe and wife, Courtney of Charlotte, Madison Inscoe Mann and husband, Bryan of Wilmington, Dana Byrum of Wilmington, and Jamie Byrum Etringer and husband, John of Durham; great-granddaughter, Eleanor Flora Inscoe; step-daughter, Jeanne Daniels and husband, Dennis of Wilson; several nieces and nephews; and a great number of dear friends and his loving dog “baby girl Maggie”.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Franklin Inscoe, Sr. and Dora Alice Smith Inscoe; 3 brothers, Willie, Arthur and Claude; sister, Dora Dean Beasley; first wife, Mildred Hasty Inscoe; special friend and corn hole partner, Ray Pittman.
The family would also like to give a special thanks to his caregivers, Charsena Thomas and Angie King.
