Wayne A. Smith August 2, 1948 – July 4, 2018 Wayne A. Smith, 69, of Wilson passed away Wednesday. His funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Joyner’s Funeral Home. The Rev. Tim McFatter and the Rev. Charles Thompson will officiate. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Monday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson and other times at the home. Wayne was born August 2, 1948 to Percy and Mildred Webb Smith in Wilson. He was a dedicated servant of the Wilson Community by serving at the Wilson Police Department from October 3, 1969 to November 17, 1998. He served faithfully starting out as an officer on the street and advanced his way through the ranks until he retired as a Captain. His colleagues always spoke highly of Wayne knowing he was a man of few words but always knew when he spoke it would be sincere and to the point. Over the past several years he cared for his mother in this home and was a faithful and loving son. Throughout Wayne’s sickness he enjoyed and looked forward to the visits and calls he received from old colleges and friends. He spoke often about those who came to see home and those who called. Wayne felt lucky to have such good friends and family and spoke fondly about those who took the time to come see him. Wayne and the family are especially grateful for the love and dedication of Carol Sue and Ken Hinnant who helped with his daily care and provided love and support for him and the family. Wayne loved his family unconditionally and will be missed more than words can say. Wayne is survived by his son, Kevin Wayne Smith and wife, Michelle; grandson, Tyler Smith; his loving cousin, Carol Smith Hinnant and husband, Ken; his aunt, Betty Smith.
