William Herbert Weir
October 22, 1926 – May 16, 2018
William “Bill” Herbert Weir, 91, of Wilson passed away Wednesday. His memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 – 1:45 p.m. The Rev. Wayne Whitley will officiate.
Bill served his country with honor and pride with the United States Army during World War II. He earned his undergraduate degree from Presbyterian College and his master’s degree from East Carolina University. An educator in Wilson County for thirty years, Bill taught history at Fike High School for eleven years, coaching both football and track, and earning the nickname “Coach”, which followed him throughout his life. Following this, he was principal at Winstead Elementary School for nineteen years before he retired.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Deborah “Debbie” Weir of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina ; son, John Mark Weir and wife, Kim of Charlotte, North Carolina; granddaughter, Elizabeth Weir of New York City; grandson, Jordan Weir of Charlotte, North Carolina and his sisters, Viola Clontz of Charlotte, North Carolina and Sue Dixon of Branham, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. Weir and Fannie Belle Weir Flaherty, and his sister, Rachel Towery.
Since 2010, Bill resided at The Landing at Parkwood Village, where he made numerous friends with both residents and The Landing staff.
