William Thomas Boswell

William Thomas “Tom” Boswell, 86, of Wilson passed away Monday, June 30, 2014. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2014, at Joyner’s Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The Rev. Dr. Douglas Murray will officiate. The family will receive friends 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway and other times at Parkwood Village and the home of Betsy Whitt. Tom graduated with honors from Charles L. Coon High School in 1946. He served his country with honor and pride in the United States Army in active duty from November 6, 1951 until his honorable discharge August 5, 1953, and served a balance of eight years of service in the Army Reserve. He obtained the rank of Sergeant and received the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, Two Bronze Service Stars, and the United Nations Service Medal. He built a career in finance, working as a bookkeeper in the banking, automotive, and tobacco industries. Most recently, Tom worked for Meals on Wheels. Tom was a member of the Sertoma Club of Wilson, serving as Secretary/Treasurer for over fifty years, President for one year, and receiving the honor of Sertoman of the Year on three separate occasions. He served on the Wilson County Board of Education from 1970 to 1974. He also served on the Board of the Red Cross of Wilson County and held the position of Secretary. He was a Boy Scout troop leader and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church of Wilson for many years. Tom is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Mildred Barnes Boswell; his daughters, Anne Boswell Burgess and husband, Buddy of Mechanicsville, VA, Betsy Boswell Whitt and husband, Steve of Wilson, and Susan Boswell Batts and husband, Roger of Wendell: his sons, William Spencer Boswell and wife, Wini of Clayton and Thomas Pope Boswell of Raleigh; daughter-in-law, Windy Barnes Boswell of Wilson; his grandchildren, Matthew Burgess and wife, Kimber of Alpharetta, GA, Susanne Burgess Acosta, and husband, Carlos of Mechanicsville, VA, Denise Whitt Leerkes and husband, Thomas of Garner, Jennifer Whitt Beichner and husband, Andy of Sims, Stephanie Whitt Locklear and husband, Jonathan of Brownstown, MI, Stuart Jones and wife, Morgan of Garner, Spencer Whitt of Philadelphia, PA, Mary Whitt of Wilmington, Tommy Batts of Wendell and fiancée, Beka Ray and daughter, Erika of Wake Forest, Christopher Batts of Wendell, Emma Boswell, William Boswell and Olivia Boswell all of Clayton, Meghan Boswell and Rachel Boswell both of Wilson; his great-grandchildren, Teagan Burgess and Bennett Burgess of Alpharetta, GA, Santi Acosta and Gideon Acosta of Mechanicsville, VA and Olivia Leerkes of Garner; his brother, Bob Boswell and wife, Sallie of Wilson; his brother-in-law, Alton Whitley of Wilson; his sister-in-law, Chris Eargle and husband, Con of Columbia, SC and many beloved nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Virginia Boswell, his sisters, Mary Whitley and Jane Hayes; his brothers-in-law, Carl Barnes, Tim Barnes, Billy Barnes, Durwood Barnes, Bill Barnes; his sister-in-law, Emma Lee Barnes; and his uncle Bill Ford and wife, Marjorie.
