William "Bill" McClure

William “Bill” Hughes McClure passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2023.  A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, October 20, 2023, at West Nash United Methodist Church, 2200 Nash Street, Wilson.  Pastor Tuck Taylor and Pastor Heather Wong will officiate.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 – 2:45 p.m. at West Nash United Methodist Church, Wilson.

Bill was born in Rutherfordton, NC.  After serving in the US Navy, Bill enrolled at Appalachian State.  There, he met his wife, Nancy and after graduation moved to Sarasota, Florida where they taught school for five years.  They returned to North Carolina where Bill was offered a job in management with Burlington Industries.  After seven moves, the last being to Wilson, Bill had a chance to become a State Farm Insurance agent.  Two years later, he became District Manager, whose job was to hire agents to increase the presence of State Farm in eastern North Carolina.  This job he loved and held until retirement.

Bill also enjoyed sports.  He spent many years coaching and supporting his children.  He was an active member of the Wilson Sertoma Club for many years and served as President.  He also enjoyed building furniture and being on the golf course with friends.

Bill was a long-time member of West Nash United Methodist Church.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West Nash United Methodist Church at westnash.org/give.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of sixty-six years, Nancy Houston McClure; children, William “Mac” McClure of Bogata, Columbia, Darin McClure and wife, Kristy of Raleigh, and Mary Kay McClure of West End; grandchildren, Camryn, Lauren and Marshall McClure and Christopher, Kaylee, Alyssa and Sadie Akerlund, and a host of numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Sadie Tanner McClure, and his siblings, Anne McClure Young and James and Donald McClure.
